B and T lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA), or CD272, is part of the immunoglobulin superfamily. Mainly expressed on B and T-cell's, it inhibits the activation and proliferation of these cells upon binding the herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM) ligand. Blockade of the BTLA/HVEM pathway is of interest to researchers investigating ways to treat cancer, for example because inhibitory signalling in T-cell's is believed to play a role in evading host anti-tumour immunity. BTLA is also studied for its involvement in the progression of diseases such as HIV and hepatitis B-related acute-on-chronic liver failure.
